January 2003 Collector´s Club
2001 Magnificent Wine Company Willamette
Valley Pinot Noir
Is that a long enough title for our first wine of the year?
It´ll last about that long in your cellar - this is a rich,
age-worthy Pinot Noir from an as-yet unidentified vineyard in Oregon,
transformed into wine by our good friend Charles Smith of K Vintners.
This is the best under $20.00 Pinot Noir I´ve run across
in quite a while. It´s $18.00, and there´s not a
whole bunch left. It´ll drink well now, and quite a bit
better later!
2001 Rulo Walla Walla Valley Syrah
Another $18.00 bottle that´s well worth the purchase price, this
wine will age well for another five years, although it is drinking
well right now as well. Come in and meet the winemaker, Kurt
Schlichter, this March - watch the web page for details! Last
year, this wine was one of our best sellers. Try this with
hearty red meat - a rib roast comes to mind. There´s good
availability.
1997 Tijou Chateau Soucherie Coteaux du
Layon Vielles Vignes
We do seem to be running to longer wine names this month! This
late harvest Chenin Blanc from the middle part of the Loire Valley in
France (and from an outstanding vintage!) is delicious right now, and
would have run you about $30.00, until I found this closed out by the
distributor! We bought up the last of it, and it enters the club
at $18.00. We have miniscule quantities left; serve it for
dessert, or age it as long as you´d like - this wine will hold a
long, long time.
2001 Syncline Columbia Valley Subduction
Red
Another interesting wine from James and Poppie Mantone, who´ll
be in the shop in March for a tasting as well (again, check the web
page...) This Grenache-based wine is lighter in style, perfectly
suited for spring picnics - by which time it´ll be long gone at
$14.50. There is, however, a good supply at the moment.
2001 Chateau Cassantour Beaujolais
Lantignie
This single-village Beaujolais is, at $11.00, our answer to Beaujolais
Nouveau. Made from the Gamay Noir grape, it´s also meant
for young drinking. It´ll match extremely well with ham or
turkey, and there´s good stock.
2000 Indian Springs Nevada County
Chardonnay
Another close-out wine! There is no more of this at the
distributor; I´m trying to get them hooked up with someone else,
because I´ve always liked this line. It was an excellent
value at $15.00; it´s even better at $12.50. Enjoy!
