CLUB WRITEUPS

February 2003 Collector´s Club

2000 DeLille Cellars D2
This perennial Merlot-based favorite has usually found its way into the club, and this year´s edition is no exception.  As usual, it´s perfectly drinkable right now and will hold for several years in your cellars.  Also as usual, there´s not a lot left, although we might get a bit more in a week or two at $30.00.  Try this with something rich and red; beef tenderloin comes to mind.

2000 Jaffurs Stolpman Family Vineyard Syrah
I wanted to put a big wine in this month´s club, and they don´t come much bigger than this and remain balanced.  This is tasting remarkably well right now, and also will hold for several years in your cellar.  There´s not a lot left, and last word is that the distributor is discontinuing the line.   It´s $24.00, down from $30.00.

2001 Selbach Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Auslese
Rather an impressive title, no? All that gibberish means that this is a late-harvest Riesling from the incredible 2001 vintage in Germany, from the Goldtröpfchen vineyard outside of Piesport.  Got that?  It´s also the first time that Johannes Selbach has made an Auslese-grade wine from this vineyard, and it´s outstanding.  It´ll age remarkably well, up to fifteen years or more, and be drinkable any time in that range.  There´s a bit left at $14.00 (!), and we have other wines from this great vintage as well from a number of producers.

1999 Familia Cassone Malbec
This is one of the most structured Argentine wines I´ve run into in quite a while and, for $9.50, it´s quite a bargain.  Try it with an herbed chicken dish.  We´ve got a good stock of this one.

2001 Mas de la Garrigue Côtes du Roussillon Villages
This was featured in the Seattle Times recently as an outstanding bargain.  At $8.00, writer Paul Gregutt is quite right.   There´s lots of it around, and can be quaffed in good conscience!

2001 Fairview Sauvignon Blanc
I love finding new importers; I especially love it when they´re bringing in good product that´s under-represented in the market.  South African wines have certainly been getting good press recently, and it´s easy to see why when Seattle-based A & B Imports started bringing in a large crop of previously-unseen wines to me to try.  You´ve already had a few of their wines in the club; this Sauvignon Blanc is a worthy followup.   There´s lots around at $8.00.  Enjoy!

We´re starting a NEW wine club!  The Northwest Wine of the Month club will feature two outstanding, hard-to-find wines per month for $75.00 or less.  Membership will be VERY limited.   Check at the shop for details!
