December 2003 Collector´s Club
2001 Edi Simcic Chardonnay
Would you believe this wine is from Slovenia? This might be the best Chardonnay
I´ve run into recently - from anywhere. It´s rich, relatively oaky
(I´m just guessing here, but probably, just probably, they used Slovenian
oak...), and, at $28.00, it´ll give a lot of the higher-priced California
chards a serious run for their money. It´s fairly limited, but we should
be able to get a small amount more, as well as their Pinot Grigio and a wonderful
(but pricey) red wine. It´s ready to drink. It´s brought in
by our favorite Italian importer, Josh Hansen of Small Vineyards Imports. Good
work!
2002 Kangarilla Road Langhorne Creek Zinfandel
Yep, that´s right - an Aussie zin! A highly-rated one at that, and one
that´s in incredibly short supply. Not to mention being really, really
good, and from a great vintage. It´s $18.00, and almost sold out.
It´ll hold for a few years without too much trouble, but it will also drink
really well right now, especially on those colder nights. Try it with a nice
peppery meal and you´ll not be disappointed.
2002 Cascade Cliffs Barbera
This might just be Washington´s funkiest winery, in all the good senses.
They really like their Italian varietal program; all estate grown fruit, generally
organic viticulture, great pricing (this is $18.00), and their quality continues to
improve from vintage to vintage. Should you be in the scenic part of the Gorge,
close to Maryhill, they´re worth a visit. The address is on the bottle.
2003 Cafayate Crios de Susana Balbo Torrontes
The Torrontes white grape is Argentina´s gift to the wine world.
It´s similar to a Sauvignon Blanc in flavor, but with a twist all its own.
It´s $13.00, and there´s a good supply for the moment.
It´ll go very well with seafood and cheese dishes.
2002 Domaine les Grands Bois Cuvée les Trois
Soeurs Côtes du Rhône
It´s nice to get a good Southern Rhone wine in, considering their 2002 vintage
was a bit soggy! Good winemakers do make good wines even in bad vintages, and
this wine will pair quite well with pork chops. It´s $9.50, and
there´s plenty to be had.
2001 Finca Santa Maria Mendoza Red Wine
This multi-grape Argentine blend is a steal at $7.50, and is almost sold out.
Sadly, the distributor will not be re-stocking this one. It´s an
excellent party wine, and will also go well with most red meat and pork dishes.
Drink up!
