CLUB WRITEUPS

June 2004 Collector´s Club

2002 Roessler Cellars Sonoma County Pinot Noir
This Pinot really impressed me when I tried it some time back with the winemaker.  It´s nice to find a California Pinot Noir at a good price ($23.50) with some real flavor and delicacy.  I´m glad to present this to the club!  Try it with salmon, or with a lighter Asian stir-fry.  There´s good availability, and it´s ready to drink (although it´ll be just fine for another five years).

2000 Jean Dauvissat Chablis Premier Cru Vaillons Vielles Vignes
It´s been an embarrassingly long time since I put a Chablis in the club; the more so as it´s one of my favorite wines. It helps that this one came to us at an outstanding price--$28.00 (it used to be close to $40!).  It was a fine wine at its original price, and it´s a steal now.  Try it with crab cakes.  It´s delicious now, and will add in complexity for another three years, possibly more.

2002 James Leigh Cellars Columbia Valley Syrah
Here´s a nice change of pace - a Washington wine at an outstanding price!   It´s all of $18.00, and there´s a lot of it around.  These nice folks also make a Walla Walla Valley Syrah, a Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Merlot (named Palette) that are all in stock as well.  An excellent wine to have with that lamb shank - anywhere over the next five years.

2002 Feudo di San Nicola Negro Amaro
Negro Amaro is yet another of the dizzying array of grapes native to Italy, this one from the Puglia region (the heel of the boot).  It´s a dark, brooding wine with a distinctive character; it´ll go well with aged cheese or game.   It´s $13.00, and there´s a good supply.  It´s ready to drink.

1999 Familia Cassone Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon
I´ve been very impressed by many of the wines coming from Argentina recently; good value (this one´s $9.50), good flavor - good wine!  Sadly, we bought the last of this one, although there´s a bit of their Malbec left at the same price.  It´s ready to drink.  Think barbeque.

2002 Ochoa Navarra Garnacha Rosé
We´re really getting around the world with this club, no?  Here´s a fine, economical rosé from the Navarra region of Spain; we call the grape Grenache after the French version, although the Spanish apparently have first claim on the grape!  It´s $7.00, ready to drink, and in good supply.
