October 2004 Collector´s Club
2002 Ridge Pagani Ranch Late Picked Zinfandel
It´s about time I put a Ridge Zinfandel in this club.
For me, Ridge wines have defined California Zinfandel at its best; power, with
grace. Also some ageability, which is not a common Zin attribute! This
monster, made with late harvested grapes, is a blockbuster. Save it for the
richest red meat dish you´ve ever cooked. Enjoy it in the next five
years. It´s $32.00, and there´s a small amount available. We
also have access to some of the other Ridge Zins; just ask.
2002 Trevor Jones "Boots" Grenache
We´re just going for the big ones this time, aren´t
we? 2002 was an outstanding year, and this is an outstanding winery.
Whichever big meal you didn´t use the Zin for, consider this one.
It´s $15.00, and there´s more available. Drink over the next five
years.
2003 Buty Semillon - Sauvignon Blanc
As usual, winemaker Caleb Foster has crafted a beautiful,
elegant Semi-Sauv, and, as usual, it reflects his distinctly Washington style of
winemaking. His wines are getting harder to obtain with each vintage, which is
a pity - most folks won´t get to try these. Lucky us! It´s
$22.00, and there´s a pittance left around. It´s ready to drink
with roast chicken or your choice of baked whitefish.
2002 Miner Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc
I never thought I´d see the day when there´d be an
affordable Miner family wine. Excellent, yes. Outstanding, frequently.
Just not affordable. This gem is going for all of $9.50, and
there´s not much left. Their Viognier is also worth a try. This
wine´s all ready to go.
2000 Vina Santurnia Rioja Crianza
I´m having difficulty believing that I haven´t put
this wine into this club yet. It shows off the Tempranillo grape to its best,
with its classy old-world style. At $11.00, it´s very affordable and
approachable and, best of all, there´s absolutely lots of it available.
It´s fine right now, and will hold for another five years without any
difficulty. Think lamb.
2000 Domaine de Font-Sane Cotes du Ventoux
Speaking of lamb, the final wine for this month is a lovely
little Southern Rhone Grenache-based wine, full of white pepper and cherry.
Serve the Rioja first, then follow it with this with that leg of lamb you were
thinking of cooking... it´s $8.50, and there´s not much left.
Enjoy!
This year´s West Seattle Helpline tasting will be held at Capers on the
21st of October, from 6:30 to 9:00 PM. It´s our favorite charity, and our
favorite tasting of the year! Many of the distributors you´ve seen at
our tasting will be there with some outstanding wines, all poured for a good cause.
Join us! Tickets are $35.00, and are available at the store. See
you there!
