January 2005 Collector´s Club
2000 Chevalier Pere & Fils Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Ah, this might take a bit of explaining - this bottle originally retailed around
$90.00. We got just enough of it at closeout for the club, making this
month´s club the "buy one, get five free" club! To make it
better, I tried this wine with the winemaker last year in France. It´s
from one of my favorite vineyards, made from 100% Chardonnay - legend has it that
the name of the vineyard is due to the great emperor´s wife objecting to his
dribbling red wine down his beard, and forced him to plant white grapes!
Whatever the truth, properly cellared, this wine should last another five years or
more, and I´d serve it with a delicate fish dish. This is a wine
I´m excited about!
2001 Brothers in Arms Langhorne Creek Shiraz
Here´s a nice monster of a wine to go with (badly-needed) hearty winter
fare. Try this with a rib roast somewhere over the next five years.
It´s a big, powerful wine from a region that is gaining a reputation for
quality. It would have been about $25.00 were we able to get any more.
2002 Helix Pomatia Columbia Valley Red Wine
This really isn´t a new winery - it´s our old friend Chuck
Reininger´s new label. Although he did just build a new winery. And
is still producing the fabulous Reinginger line of wines. We tried this on our
recent visit to Walla Walla and loved it. And - surprise!! - we can get more.
It´s $18.00 a bottle, and ready to drink. Chuck´s Red Table
Wine, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot are all also available, and worth trying.
He just doesn´t make bad wine. Should you be in Walla Walla, drop
by and say we sent you!
2000 Marlunghe Villa Dei Vesconi Rosso del Veneto
A nice every-day quaffer, this Italian blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon is a
good, inexpensive accompaniment to your evening pizza/pasta/burger/etc. And
there´s more in stock at $9.50.
2000 Medici Chardonnay Willamette Valley
Peter Rosback of Sineann fame made this one, and yes, it´s ready to drink and
yes, it´s sold out… sorry ‘bout that! I´d say roast chicken would
go well. I believe we can get a more recent vintage of this should you like.
2002 Angove´s Shiraz
What´s this? Two Chardonnays, two Shiraz in the same club? And two
red wine blends? Yes, but they´re all good! This one is $7.00, and
rates well anywhere it´s been rated. A good every day type of wine at a
price that you can actually afford every day. And there´s plenty
available, and it´s ready to drink. Enjoy!
