April 2005 Collector´s Club
2002 Natalie´s Estate Winery Rosa Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
I was introduced to Natalie´s Estate Winery some years back at an
Oregon tasting for Sineann wines, one of my favorites. Sineann winemaker Peter Rosback told
me I absolutely had to try these wines, and he was right - it´s a gorgeous wine. Made
from Yakima Valley fruit, this is a powerful, fun wine that´s unfortunately not sold too
well for their distributor, hence it´s $22.00 closeout price. I bought all that´s
left. Hold for up to another five years, and enjoy it!
2003 Waterwheel Memsie Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon-Malbec
This here´s a big wine, and one that´s ready to drink.
It comes from a region in South Australia that I had to look up, Bendigo. It´s a rich,
full-bodied wine that is also well balanced, a rare combination. It´s also inexpensive,
$15.00, and in good supply. It´ll hold for another three years.
2002 Pierres de Lune Couteaux du Giennois
This is definitely a club for unusual regions, no? This wine hails from
the upper Loire Valley in France, and is a blend of Gamay Noir and Pinot Noir. The winery is
part of the Sancerre-based Domaine Laporte, which is owned by the Bourgeois family - remember those
Sauvignon Blancs a few clubs ago? It´s from a region you really don´t see very
often, and from a wonderful year for this part of the Loire. It´ll take up to three more
years of aging, and will go well with pork roast or salmon. It´s $16.00, and
there´s a bit left.
2003 Mas de Lairole Coteaux du Languedoc
This one´s a lovely little quaffer from southern France. It´s
a blend of 35% Carignan, 30% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 15% Mourvedre - all the classic southern
varietals. This will hold well for another couple years, and is also good right now.
It´s $9.75, and there might be a bit left. Try it with small game, like rabbit.
By the way, "Mas" is southern French for "Chateau."
2003 Manciat-Poncet Macon-Charnay Les Chenes
It´s affordable white Burgundy time! The Macon is the southernmost
of the great Burgundy regions, just above Beaujolais. I love wines from the Macon -
they´re fun, affordable versions of chardonnay. This one´s from a super-ripe
vintage, and should be consumed young. It´ll liven up halibut quite nicely.
It´s $16.00, and there´s more available.
2002 Trois Freres Muscadet
This is one of my favorite summer wines. It goes wonderfully with
shellfish of all descriptions; also ripe cheeses. It comes from the area around Nantes, at the
mouth of the Loire. It´s $9.75, and there´s more available. Enjoy!
