CLUB WRITEUPS

July 2005 Collector´s Club

2002 Domaine Durand Gevrey-Chambertin
I absolutely love putting Burgundy in any club; the more so when it´s from as good a vintage as ´02.  This comes from fairly north in the Cote d´Or, around the village of Gevrey (in Burgundy, typically the village appends the name of the most famed vineyard in its region to it´s name, hence "Puligny-Montrachet" or "Gevrey-Chambertin").   As all (ok, most all) red Burgundy, it´s made from Pinot Noir.  It´ll age for another 5-8 years easily, although it´s drinking quite well now.  There´s a fair amount left around at $39.50.

2004 Grace Wine Koshu
Now here´s something you just don´t get every day, folks - a wine from Japan!   It´s made from the Koshu grape which, while not indigenous to Japan, has been grown there for around 1200 years, having arrived via the spice route.  The wine is made near Mt. Fuji for Grace Winery by Denis Dubourdieu, who is also well known for his fine Bordeaux; unsurprisingly, this wine is quite reminiscent of a white Bordeaux.  It´s ready to drink.  There´s a fair amount available at $19.75.

2000 Seigneurs de Monbazillac Monbazillac
Monbazillac (I just put that there in order to type it three times in a row...) is an appellation just up river from the famed Bordeaux sweet wine area of Sauternes, and is made from the same grapes - Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Muscadelle.  It´s a delicious, sweet, figgy wine that runs about $12.00 (we´re out; it´s all sold out).  Chill it well and serve it with cheesecake.

2003 Mad Dogs and Englishmen Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon-Monastrell
Here´s a great party wine from Jumilla in Spain, made in a very Australian style for importer Peter Click.  It´s all ready to drink, and will pair well with barbeque.   It´s $9.75, and there´s tons available.

2003 Les Souches Chardonnay
We´ve had this in the club before, and it´s just as good this year.  Alas, as the Euro has strengthened against the dollar, it has gone up in price.  This month (July), we´ll hold the price at $9.75.  Next month, it´ll go up to its regular shelf price of $11.00.

2004 Pasqua Sangiovese di Puglia
Another wine that´s been in the club before!  I love repeat offenders... as I noted last time around, this wine is just a great drinking wine for that deck party; for pizza; for pasta... you get the picture. Also a victim of the sinking dollar, it´s gone up to $9.00.   It´s all ready to drink, and there´s a fair amount more available.  Kanpai (Japanese for Drink Up!)
