September 2005 Collector´s Club
2004 Abbot´s Table Red Wine
I love this wine! This is a perennial favorite of all of us here, and
it´s been our best-selling wine for four years running. This year´s effort shows
no sign that it´ll lose that title. Made by winemaker David O´Reilly (also
associated with Sineann), it´s a rich blend of six or seven varietals. I´m
glad we´re able to offer it to the club. It´s $23.00, and we have a reasonable
amount left. It´ll hold for another five years, but why wait?
2004 Andrew Rich Sauvignon Blanc
Here´s a perfect wine for the last days of summer. It´s
bright and crisp as a good Sauvignon Blanc should be, still with a rich body and full flavor.
It´s $19.00, and there´s some available. I usually say that Sauvignon Blanc is
best young, but I recently had a twelve-year old one from my cellar that stunned me with its
freshness, so all bets are off...
2000 Mannucci Droandi Chianti Classico
Last month, the Riserva. This month, the regular! It´s
also a closeout, so this one will go away quickly. It´s $15.00, and this
Sangiovese-based wine will hold for up to ten years in your cellar - but again, why wait?
Serve it with grilled foods and you´ll be pleased. Pair it with the Riserva in a tasting
(after letting them both breathe for a few hours!) and see what the difference is.
2003 Saviah The Jack
I´ve always been very fond of Richard Funk´s wines. He
makes some of the richest wines in Walla Walla valley, and I´m glad that we´ve been
carrying them since his first release. Couldn´t quite squeeze them into this club,
since they tend toward the higher end of the price scale. Until now. The Jack is all
of $15.00, and it´s an excellent red blend that will go well with a good steak from the
grill. There´s a fair amount.
2003 Morgan Chardonnay
This wine hails from Monterey, and it´s a nice, rich, buttery style
that´s very well made. It´s $18.00, and there´s very little left because,
after I´d decided to put it in the club, it got a very nice review in a certain wine
magazine. A rapid way of making sure that nobody can find the wine, unfortunately!
It´s ready to drink.
1999 Condesa de Leganza
We´ll round off this month´s club with a very tasty Spanish
number. It´s $8.00, and ready to drink. With its dark fruit profile, it´d
work very well as an evening quaffer. And, if you order a case, you get a snazzy wooden box
with your wine!
