November 2005 Collector´s Club
2003 Georg Breuer Spatburgunder
I love finding wines like this for this club. This is a German Pinot Noir, made in an
excellent year for the grape by a master of the wine. This would be an outstanding
wine with any particular fowl you might be serving this month - or also next year.
This wine will definitely hold for another five years. There´s not a lot left;
I bought the last cases available locally for this club, but the Seattle-based importer
definitely has more available. It´s $19.75.
Sean Thackrey Pleiades Batch XIII
This is a wonderful old-vine blend of Zinfandel, Carignane, Syrah, Barbera, Pinot Noir,
Grenache...and a few others. It´s a spectacular, powerful wine, like all of
Thackray´s. Unfortunately, like all of Thackray´s wines, the remaining
backstock of this burned in a large arson-caused warehouse fire in Vallejo, California.
We have a bit left, and there might be a bit more locally. It´s ready to drink -
and I´d drink it at T-Day - and it´s $26.00.
2005 Mulderbosch Sauvignon Blanc
Last year, I was able to bring in just enough of this wine for the Specialty Club.
This year, we were fortunate enough to land this wine for this club. It´s one of
South Africa´s best Sauvignon Blancs, a grape that does exceedingly well in the
Stellenbosch region. This wine will go really well with a cheese course.
It´ll also hold well for a couple years. There´s a bit more available at
$22.00.
2004 Cave de Rasteau Les Viguiers Cotes du Rhone
Based on wines like this that I´ve tried, I´m really looking forward to the 04
Southern Rhone wines. There´s a delicacy in the best that I´ve not seen in
several years. "This one has some lovely white pepper flavors along with rich fruit.
It´s another wine for your Thanksgiving repast. There´s a reasonable amount
available at $11.00.
2002 Porcupine Ridge Merlot
This one is from the nearly unpronounceable Boekenhoutskloof winery of South Africa.
There´s an identifiable flavor to many reds from the region, kind of an earthy,
game-meat flavor that works very well with roasted meats. This is $7.50, and
there´s a small amount left.
2004 Domaine des Casagnoles Vin de Pays des Cotes de Gascogne
We round out this month´s selections with an old favorite from the southwest of
France. It´s a lighter, crisp white that works extremely well with goat cheeses
and other appetizer dishes. There´s quite a bit left at $8.00.
Well, we´ve done it! As I type this, our new shop is in the finishing
stages. We should be in it around the first week in December. We hope to have a
lovely little get-to-know-our-new-shop sale if we´re open in time; keep your eyes on
the web page!
