January 2006 Collector´s Club
2002 Domaine Michel Gros Bourgogne Rouge
Since it was such a great vintage, I had thought that almost all the
2002 Bourgognes were long since sold. I´m glad I was wrong. This is a great
way to enjoy a lovely Pinot Noir, and at an affordable price. The grapes for this
wine come from two vineyards located in Nuits-St-Georges and in Vosne-Romanee, and are
hand-harvested. There´s a bit more of this wine available; it should hold
another two to three years in your cellar.
2002 Magpie Estates "The Fakir" Barossa Valley
Grenache
2002 was also a brilliant year in the Barossa Valley of Australia,
whence comes this delicious Grenache. Unlike many Barossa Valley wines (especially
of this vintage) which tend towards the big n´ blousy school, this one is
well-balanced, and an excellent match for a rib roast. It´s $19.75, and
there´s a reasonable amount available.
2003 Magito North Coast Zinfandel
This is the Magito Winery´s first release, and it´s
gorgeous. While it is primarily Zinfandel, the wine is also blended with Merlot,
Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Barbera, and a touch of Cabernet
Franc. This is an excellent Zin! It´s all of $17.25.
2004 Le Salette Valpolicella Classico
And now for something completely different - a lighter, fruity
style of Valpolicella. This wine is ready to drink, and will pair well with lighter
foods, or just by itself. It´s all of $14.00, and there´s plenty more to
be had.
2004 Alois Lageder Alto Adige Pinot Bianco
This distinctive bone-dry Pinot Bianco is made by one of
Italy´s finest producers of the grape. It´s an outstanding aperitif wine,
excellent with shellfish or chicken or cheese, or just enjoyed by itself. It´s
$12.00, and there´s a good supply.
2003 Domaine des Baumard La Caleche Anjou
I love wines from this producer. Some years back, I visited
this winery in Rochefort-sur-Loire, and was treated to a trip through some of the Loire
Valley´s greatest vineyards. This white wine is primarily Chenin Blanc, with a
bit of Sauvignon Blanc and (possibly) Chardonnay in the blend. It´s dry, light,
and refreshing, and there should be more available at $9.50. Enjoy!
Our wine classes still have room available! They´re held on Thursdays at
7:30 PM, starting January 19th with a Basic Tasting Class, followed on the 26th with a
Spain and Portugal Seminar. "February 2nd will see a Germany/Austria class, the 9th
an Italian class, and the 16th a French class. All classes are $35.00, with discounts
for multiple classes or for club memberships. Hope to see you there!
