April 2006 Collectors´ Club
2003 Abeja Cabernet Sauvignon and 2004 Chardonnay
Yeehaw! We were able to get enough of both of these wines for the club! Wines
from Walla Walla´s Abeja winery are hard to come by at the retail level. The
wines are first-rate, made by John Abbott, ex-winemaker for Canoe Ridge Winery. The
attention to detail in these wines (and in the winery) is astounding. I´d put
the Cab away for a while, around five years, and hold the Chardonnay a year or so.
There are microscopic amounts left of both wines, the Cabernet at $37.25, the Chardonnay at
$29.75. They are among the state´s finest. Should you go to the winery
(call ahead for appointments), please use our name and thank them for making this possible.
2004 Two Hands The Wolf Clare Valley Riesling
One of the difficult parts of making up this club is coming up with outstanding wines at
great prices to offset wines like Abeja. Once in a while we get some help. This
great Aussie Riesling used to be in the mid-$20s; the winery is changing importers, so we
picked it up for a song. It´s hitting the club at $9.75. It´s bone
dry, with a racy acidity that will offset shellfish and cheese. I´d recommend
trying it with crab. There´s some left, though not much. It´ll hold
in your cellar for another five years - there´s very little that will stop a great
Riesling from aging well.
2004 Nine Stones Hilltops Shiraz
See above for comments about price. This is also a close-out, sadly - it´s one
of the best balanced Aussie Shirazes I´ve run across in quite a while. It´s
all of $9.75, and there´s again some left. It´s ready to go; I´d
have it with a backyard grilling spectacular.
2004 Monte Don Lucio Tempranillo
This yummy party favorite comes in at all of $5.00! It´s so nice to find that
you can still find good wine at this price. It´s from the La Mancha region of
Spain, and there´s a good amount left.
2004 Marques de Daroca Grenache-Syrah
This nice little Spanish number comes from the Valle del Jiloca, and is $6.00.
There´s a good amount left. I´d have this party pleaser with barbequed
chicken.
