July 2006 Collector´s Club
2004 Clos Marie L´Olivette Pic Saint Loup
This wine from the Pic Saint Loup region of Languedoc knocked us
out at a tasting, all the more remarkable for it being the wine that followed the
Dagueneau Pouilly-Fumes in the tasting! Winemaker Christophe Peyrus farms his
vineyards biodynamically, and no pesticides or herbicides have ever been used on the
land. To add a personal connection to this wine, shortly after tasting this
wine (with the winemaker,) I received an email from friends in Lyon, asking if I had
met their best friend´s son, a winemaker who was in Seattle on business.
It´s a very small world. The wine is made from 40% Grenache, 40% Syrah,
and 20% Mourvedre, grown in this beautiful, hilly region just north of Montpelier in
the south of France. It´s $25.00, and there´s a bit more
available. It´ll hold for another five years, although it´s a good
quaff now. Try with barbeque chicken or lamb.
2004 Podere Elia Dolcetto d´Alba
Well, here we go - the first in what is to be a two-month
excursion into Italian wine! A while ago, I sat in on a tasting where a number
of Italian wines were presented by our friends at Small Vineyards Imports.
These wines were not yet available; we were given the opportunity to pre-order what
we liked, and that amount would be loaded onto a container and shipped over - and
that´s all there´d be. I liked a number of wines which you´ll
be seeing over the next few months. All these wines are limited, needless to
say, but I did bring in a few extra cases of each. This wine, by winemaker
Federico Stella, has a lovely sweet fruit palate. It´s $13.00, and will
hold for a year or so. We featured this outstanding winery´s Barbaresco
in an earlier club.
2005 Perazzeta Sara Rosso Toscano
This yummy wine is named for winemaker Alessandro Bocci´s
teenage daughter. Some of you might be familiar with his other wine, named
Sara after his wife; this wine is delightfully brambly with nice ripe redfruits.
It´s ready to drink, and we have a fair amount available for $9.75.
2003 Guillemot-Michel Macon-Villages
The 2003 vintage all over France was incredibly hot; in many
areas, to the detriment of the wine. Not so in the Macon, the southernmost
stretch of the Burgundy region. The 03s there have been the best white burgs
of the vintage, at some great prices. Made from the Chardonnay grape, this
area is farmed biodynamically, and the wine shows the outcome. While it´s
ready to drink now, it´ll be even more lovely in a year or so. It´s
$19.75, and almost all gone.
2005 Forte Canto Negroamaro Salento Rosato
This lovely rose has a powerful, vibrant strawberry nose.
It´s a heck of a wine for $11.00, just right for summer quaffing with cheese on
the deck. There´s a fair amount more in stock.
2004 Marchetti Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi
This wine is a real find by our friends at Small Vineyards.
It´s a late-harvest verdicchio that is fermented almost dry. It is
full-bodied and lush, and a favorite at our recent club tasting. It´s also
low priced at $15.00, and we have a fair amount left. Enjoy!
