Specialty Club May 2003
Welcome to the first writeup for the club! I´ve had numerous
requests to jot down a few notes on why these wines are in the clubs,
and why they´re, well, special. Enjoy!
2000 Gilga Stellenbosch Shiraz
Did you realize that the home of "Shiraz" is actually South
Africa? Apparently, Australia got their grapes (and
pronunciation) from there. Absolutely minimal amounts of this
wine are made, and even tinier quantities imported. It´s
definitely not Aussie; much lighter-bodied, with more emphasis placed
on elegance and structure. While it is definitely drinkable now,
I´d really recommend giving it about five years in your cellar.
It´s a fascinating wine. $44.00, and I could
probably scare up another couple of bottles.
2000 Schoffit Clos Saint-Theobald Rangen
de Thann Pinot Gris
This Alsatian Grand Cru Pinot Gris is spectacular! Incredibly
rich, with great definition of flavors, this one is ready to drink,
and will also hold for about three years. I may be
underestimating that slightly, but I prefer my Pinot Gris young to
capture the fruitiness. It´s $43.00, and it´s gone...
