November 2004 Specialty Club
2001 Quinta do Crasto Touriga Nacional
We´re finally beginning to see some of the high-end Portugese dry table
wines in our market, albeit in limited quantities; the Northwest only received 18
bottles of this spectacular wine, and we got most of ‘em. If you´re
looking for more, we might get lucky. It´s made from the Touriga Nacional
grape, which produces tiny, hard clusters of fruit, which make for a powerful,
long-lived wine. It´s also one of the primary grapes for Port.
Quinta do Crasto is a single vineyard in the Douro region, in the northeast of
Portugal. It´s $51.50.
... and now for something completely different,
2001 Sonoma - Cutrer "The Cutrer" Chardonnay
Here´s a hard-to-find (yet relatively economical) Chardonnay from California.
It comes from The Cutrer Vineyard in the Russian River Valley, and is ready
for consumption. Rich, full-bodied yet with lovely aromatics, it´s one
heck of a good example of what California can do! It´s $31.50.
