December 2004 Specialty Club
2001 Fattoria Sonnino San Leone Toscana
This SuperTuscan, a blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Sangiovese, and 10% Petit Verdot, and
is one of the most beautiful wines I tried at a recent tasting. There´s
tiny amounts of this wine imported, all of it by special order (we ordered this some
months ago.) While the importer suggests aging this, I think it´s better
in the near term. Definitely a New World type of interpretation of these
grapes, but a definitively powerful - and appropriate - version. It´s
$45.00, and gone.
2002 Domaine des Aubuisieres Le Plan de Jean Vouvray
About five years ago I toured the Loire Valley. The producer of this wine,
Bernard Fouquet, was one of the highlights of the trip. His winery is carved
directly in to the limestone cliffs of Vouvray - literally a cave. His wines
are all produced biodynamically, no pesticides, no artificial anything allowed.
The 2002 vintage was one of the finest in the recent past, and this Chenin Blanc is
a late harvest wine that absolutely sings. It´ll age forever. We
have tiny amounts left at $29.75. Only seven cases came to the northwest.
