February 2006 Specialty Club
2003 K Vintners El Jefe
Charles Smith is a wild man. This might seem like I´m stating the obvious, but
in case there´s any doubts, I´d like that cleared up first. "This wine
is powerful. That´s another obvious statement. Charles likes his wines
big; he likes to show the terroir the grapes come from. He usually succeeds.
This 70% Tempranillo, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon blend retails for $55.00, and we have a
tiny amount left. It´s one of his most successful wines. It is ready to
go; enjoy it over the next five years or so.
2004 Clos Henri Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
Some years back, Domaine Henri Bourgeois owner Jean-Marie Bourgeois told my wife that
he´d bought land in New Zealand, having been very impressed with the quality of
Sauvignon Blanc he´d tasted. This is the second vintage, and they´re
increasingly difficult to get hold of. I think it´s as good a SauvBlanc as
you´ll find in New Zealand, and it´s all of $28.00. We have a bit left.
I´m hoping to put his 2004 Marlborough Pinot Noir into this club - it´s
as good a Pinot as you´ll find there as well.
