August 2007 Specialty Club
2005 Boyer-Martenot, Meursault-Charmes
It´s no secret that Bear is a hard core Burg-hound.
So when he selects a Burgundy to put in the Specialty Club, you know it´s got
to be good. This Meursault comes from Yves Boyer, a top class Burdundian
winemaker whose vineyards include some of Meursault´s finest parcels.
Les Charmes is one of the top vineyards in Meursault producing some of the most
forward and seductive wines in the region. Boyer-Martenot‘s wines come from
very old vines with extremely low yields and exude the classic balance and minerality
that Meursault is so revered for. This is Chardonnay like none other and, at
$75.75, this is all we could get. 2005 was a vintage that produced some
wonderfully big and voluptuous wines and this one could easily be enjoyed on its own,
or paired with your next seafood feast.
2004 Scali, Pinotage
Yes, it´s true - we´ve probably never featured a
Pinotage in this club before. It hasn´t typically been one of the more
highly esteemed varietals in the great wine scheme of things. But the wine world
is constantly evolving and we were thrilled to discover this exceptional Pinotage
recently. It´s $25, very limited (only 11 barrels were produced in 2004),
and extremely well-made. Scali is in its fifth generation meticulously crafting
wines on their family farm Schoone Oord in South Africa. It is drinking well
now, very balanced and refined, but it could easily age for another 3 to 8 years.
Decanting is recommended, as it is bottled unfined and unfiltered. While it is
much smoother than most Pinotages, it is still a good candidate for meat dishes or
other hearty fare.
