September 2004 Washington State Wine Of The Month
Boudreaux Cellars
You guessed it - another winery hit a home run for us this month. All three
wines this month are from one of our state´s newest wineries. Boudreaux
Cellars is based in Icicle Canyon, about eight miles back into the mountains from
Leavenworth. It´s a fitting location for winemaker Rob Newsom, since the
man is a former alpine guide - possibly one of the few occupations riskier than w
inemaking! He got hooked on Washington wine after hooking up with
Leonetti´s Gary Figgins, and, at Gary´s urging, began making wines as an
amateur a while back. This is his first professional release. Production
is miniscule, but the quality is certainly there, as are his fruit sources: Seven
Hills and Pepper Bridge vineyards for his 2002 Syrah ($30.00), Bishop´s and
Homestead vineyards for his 2003 Chardonnay ($26.00), and Dionysis vineyard for his
2003 Semillon ($26.00). There´s a reasonable amount of all three left, as
well as a Sangiovese-based Red Table Wine that goes for $17.00. Rob is a
charming man, originally from Louisiana, and one heck of a musician as well. I
spent a very nice evening at his place (a log cabin he made himself, yet!) not long
ago, sitting with a couple friends, playing guitar while Rob played dobro; this
shipment was delayed in its arrival as he was at a bluegrass festival in Oregon!
The man certainly has his priorities in order!
