October 2005 Washington Wine of the Month
2003 Walter Dacon Syrah C´est Syrah Belle
It seems that new wineries are cropping up just about anywhere someone can put a building.
We´ve seen ‘em in Mazama; they´re hiding up near the Canadian border; even Walla Walla
has a few... now here´s a winery from scenic Shelton. Guess what. It´s
outstanding. It runs $27.00, we´ve more available, and the winery will be releasing
two other Syrahs shortly. Winemaker Lloyd Anderson has fashioned a well-balanced, nuanced
wine, and I´m looking forward to trying his other releases. I´d recommend waiting
a bit before opening it - a year or so should do the trick.
2003 Animale Yakima Valley Syrah
And, from the pride of Ballard, comes this new Syrah release. Winemaker Matt Gubitosa really
doesn´t like too much new oak on his wines; it´s actually rather difficult to think of
another winemaker with less. I´d really recommend saving this for two or three years;
allowing the wine to flesh out. It´s $24.00, and he didn´t make much, as usual.
Don´t delay if you´d like more.
2002 Buty Columbia Rediviva
Here´s a repeat offender. It´s hard for me to keep these wines out of this club
- it´s really what it was designed to spotlight: excellent, low-production wines from
outstanding boutique wineries. Besides, there are such limited quantities that this is
practically the only way to get this wine into the hands of those who care most for it!
There´s a bit left at $39.75 and yes, if you add all three of these wines together you´d
come to a bit more than $75.00. So we ran ‘em at $75.00 flat. Enjoy!
