December 2007 Washington Wine Club
2004 Stevens XY Yakima Valley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
In the last few years, Tim Stevens’ wines have become incredibly
popular - this wine and the latest vintage of his elegant 424 blend have sold out on the day
of release. Fortunately, Tim saved for us a couple of cases of the second release of this
reserve wine, sourced this year from Sheridan and Dineen vineyards in the Yakima Valley
(also used for the 424). It's powerful and intense, and definitely "masculine"
in style (the XY refers to chromosomes, not some mysterious code.) A classic wine for
a big juicy steak, it will continue to develop over the next five years. We have only a
tiny bit more at $41.50, but we do have quite a bit left of Tim’s delightful and equally
powerful Black Tongue Syrah.
2005 Walla Walla Vintners Bello Rosso Columbia Valley
Myles Anderson and Gordy Venneri have been making outstanding wines
since their start in 1995; wines so outstanding that Walla Walla Vintners was called "Baby
Leonetti" in the early days of the Walla Walla wine renaissance (according to a nice history
recently published in the Seattle Times by our friend Paul Gregutt.) This is their first
try at making a Sangiovese-Cabernet blend, and their model was not the big "Super-Tuscans,"
but rather the earthy wines of Umbria, with their strong aromas and flavors of mushrooms,
olives, and roasted eggplant. Soft and ready to drink, it would be perfect with such
traditional Italian dishes as porcini mushrooms with black truffles or tagliatelle with
cream. Since only 247 cases were made, we have no more available. It was $34.50.
Once again, this is the time of year when many limited release Washington wines
become available in tiny quantities. If you are interested in wines from Abeja, Betz,
Cayuse, DeLille, K Vintners, or Quilceda Creek, please talk to us as soon as possible.
